It is said that discipline is the difference between greatness and mediocrity. When it comes to leadership, discipline does not mean punishing people. Rather, discipline refers to being in complete control of oneself. As a leader it is important to model the behavior you expect from your team. Being a disciplined leader is important because it helps establish clear expectations, improves decision making, increases accountability, and enhances the overall effectiveness of a team. A disciplined leader is able to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and maintain focus on their goals, which contributes to their ability to lead effectively and achieve desired outcomes.
Discipline should encompass every area of the leader’s life. Consider these characteristics as you work on becoming a disciplined leader.
Self-Control
A disciplined leader has the ability to control their emotions, thoughts, and actions, which allows them to make rational decisions and respond to challenges with composure. There are 4 types of self-control: physical movement, emotion, concentration, and impulses. Take time to meditate and self-reflect. Be honest with yourself and seek help if you have struggles with any of these issues. Building yourself up will always result in great results.
Focus
A disciplined leader has the ability to stay focused on their goals and prioritize tasks to ensure they are making progress towards their objectives. You can’t let yourself be distracted by other “shiny” objects or ideas. Stay laser-focused on getting the right things done at the right time. Ask yourself: do you become easily distracted from your most important tasks? Jim Rohn said, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” Stay focused.
Consistency
A disciplined leader follows through on their commitments, adheres to established standards and procedures, and acts with integrity in all situations. Consistency is always key. Most people fail because they lack the endurance to remain consistent. Unfortunately, we live in an era of instant gratification, but true success comes to those who are consistent in pursuing their goals. In order to build your ability to remain consistent, try focusing on incremental improvement. Reward yourself for all your small wins because they compound into major ones.
Time Management
A disciplined leader is organized and efficient, which allows them to effectively manage their time and resources and make the most of every opportunity. More than anything else, a leader must be disciplined with their time. You must be able to get things done efficiently, focusing on the job in front of you and making swift progress through your tasks. It’s easy to get sidetracked during the day, but the best leaders are able to maintain focus.
Adaptability
A disciplined leader is adaptable and flexible, able to respond to changes and challenges with resilience and determination, and adjust their approach as needed to achieve success. This is particularly important in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing business environment where leaders must be able to respond quickly to new developments, pivot their strategy, and adapt to new circumstances. An adaptable leader is better equipped to stay ahead of the curve, respond to new challenges, and lead their team to success in the face of uncertainty.
These characteristics, and others, are all necessary for disciplined leadership, and if you may have noticed, good leadership in general. In other words, you’ll never achieve your highest and greatest goals if you’re not disciplined. If, on the other hand, you’re able to hold yourself to the highest standards, you’ll achieve the success that you are working so hard for.
